Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Research on serious infections/sepsis has focused on the hospital environment, while potentially the most delay, and therefore possibly the best opportunity to improve quality of care, lies in the prehospital setting. In this study we investigated the prehospital phase of adult emergency department (ED) patients with an infection.Entities:

| 30-day all-cause mortality | |
| Sepsis | Suspected or proven infection and the presence of two or more Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria and/or quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) criteria [ |
| SIRS | Temperature >38°C or <36°C, heart reate >90/min, respiratory rate >20/min or PaCO2 <4.3kPa (32 mmHg), white blood cell count >12000/mm3 or <4000/mm3 or >10% immature bands |
| qSOFA | Respiratory rate ≥22/min, altered mentation, systolic blood pressure ≤100 mmHg[ |
| SOFA | 0–24 points, depending on PaO2/FiO2 ratio, platelet count, bilirubin, MAP, administration of vasopressors (type and dose), Glasgow Coma Scale and serum creatinine or urine output[ |
| Sepsis severity | Sepsis: sepsis in the absence of severe sepsis or septic shock |
| Adverse outcomes | All-cause mortality within 30 days and/or admission to ICU |
