The production of T-helper cell type 2 cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-13 or infection with rhinovirus suppresses expression of FOXA2 in club cells. The loss of FOXA2 leads to loss of SCGB1A1 and the loss of proper airway function, such as that seen in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
