Physiology and biochemistry of insect digestion: an evolutionary perspective.

W R Terra1.

Abstract

This review primarily considers those papers which provide a full description of the steps by which the ingested food is hydrolyzed in the different regions of the insect gut. It is organized on the basis of major physiological topics and evolutionary hypotheses are used to integrate the data. A comprehensive proposal on the evolution of digestive systems in insects is provided.
