The value of ultrasound screening of the upper urinary tract in hypospadias.

M Davenport1, A E MacKinnon.

Abstract

Renal tract ultrasonography was performed in 82 of 111 patients with varying degrees of hypospadias. There were 2 true positive results (2.4%) and 1 false negative (1.2%). However, 2 of these patients would have been fully investigated because of the presence of an anorectal anomaly. The third boy had a pelvic ectopic kidney with no clinical significance. It was concluded that routine ultrasonography is not justified in this condition unless it is severe or there is an associated anomaly.
