Abstract
BACKGROUND: The role of antidepressants (ADs) in bipolar disorder is long-standing controversial issue in psychiatry. Many clinicians have used ADs as a treatment for bipolar depression, and the selection of therapeutic agents is very diverse and inconsistent. aComorbid anxiety disorders: the patient visited a clinic or hospital at least once with a diagnosis code of neurotic, stress-related, or somatoform disorder (F40.0–F48.9); bManic: the patient visited a clinic or hospital at least once with a main diagnosis code of manic episode (F30), hypomanic episode (F31.0), manic episode without psychotic symptoms (F31.1), or manic episode with psychotic symptoms (F31.2). Depressive: the patient visited a clinic or hospital at least once with a main diagnosis code of mild or moderate depression (F31.3), severe depression without psychotic symptoms (F31.4), or severe depression with psychotic symptoms (F31.5). Other: the patient visited a clinic or hospital at least once with a main diagnosis code of mixed episode (F31.6), currently in remission (F31.7), other bipolar affective disorder (F31.8), or unspecified bipolar disorder (F31.9).
