Abstract
BACKGROUND: Anhedonia (loss of pleasure) is characterized by low responsiveness to rewards and, by virtue of being one of the two core symptoms of depression, by altered responses to stress. We investigated the effect of an acute stress experience (i.e., a tandem skydive) that was expected to elicit both intense fear and intense euphoria in a sample of anhedonic young adults.Entities:

Fig 1Plot mean alpha-amylase levels (U/mL) per measurement.
The first measurement took place 15 minutes after the participant arrived at the skydive center, the second after they received the instructions and were ready to board the plane, the third immediately after they landed, and the fourth 20 minutes after they landed.
Fig 2Individual plots alpha-amylase levels (U/mL) on four measurements surrounding the tandem skydive.
The first measurement took place 15 minutes after the participant arrived at the skydive center, the second after they received the instructions and were ready to board the plane, the third immediately after they landed, and the fourth 20 minutes after they landed. The mean score of the four measurements is shown on the y-axis. The grey cross indicates a participant with an outlier on T4. This participant was removed prior to further analyses.
