Abstract
BACKGROUND: Accurate patient expectations are important to optimise treatment success, especially for complex conditions such as chronic pain. Communication may be the key to managing patient expectations. This study aimed to explore whether health care provider communication influences patient expectations and which communication aspects are most important.Entities:

The first part of the construction of the dependent variable: the merger of the responses to the patient reported outcome question and the treatment goals. (N = 585)
| Goal is complete recovery | Goal is decrease in pain | Goal is to stabilise pain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The pain has gone | 9b | 1c | 0c |
| The pain has (slightly) decreased | 36a | 238b | 110c |
| The pain is stable | 6a | 83a | 61b |
| The pain has (slightly) increased | 2a | 23a | 16a |
aGoal was not achieved
bGoal was achieved
cResults were better than treatment goal
The second part of the construction of the dependent variable: the accuracy of patient expectations (too low expectations, accurate expectations and too high expectations).(N = 469)
