[Aging-related frailty and sarcopenia. Frailty, sarcopenia and osteoporosis:A 4-year observation of the second and third ROAD study surveys.]

Noriko Yoshimura1.

Abstract

In this 4-year follow-up study of the population-based cohort entitled ROAD that enrolled 1099 subjects aged≧60 years, sarcopenia prevalence was estimated to be 8.2%, with a cumulative incidence of 2.0%/yr. In addition, the prevalence of frailty was estimated to be 5.6%with a cumulative incidence of 1.2%/yr. After adjustment for confounding factors, logistic regression analysis indicated that osteoporosis was significantly associated with the occurrence of sarcopenia and frailty. Therefore, we conclude that preventing osteoporosis may help to reduce the risk of subsequent sarcopenia and frailty.
