†Estimates are mutually exclusive as based on different subsamples.
‡More than one estimate reported in the study, but preference given to one estimate using the following algorithm: estimate derived from multivariate analysis; the definition of IPV closely matches that of other studies in the health outcome group; where the reference group was unexposed to any violence; where the estimate was most precise.
AAS, Abuse Assessment Screen; ADS, Alcohol Dependence Scale; aOR, adjusted OR; aRR, adjusted Risk Ratio; BDI, Beck Depression Inventory; CAS, Composite Abuse Scale; CES-D, Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale; CIDI-SF, Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Short Form; CSA, childhood sexual abuse; CTS, Conflict Tactics Scale; CT-like, like the Conflict Tactics Scale; EPDS, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; HADS, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; ICD-10, International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision; IPV, intimate partner violence; IRR, Incidence Rate Ratio; ISA, Index of Spouse Abuse; LSD, Lysergic acid diethylamide; MAST, Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test; PCP, Phencyclidine; PHQ-9, Patient Health Questionnaire; PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; RR, Relative Risk; STI, sexually transmitted infection; SRQ, Self-Report Questionnaire; SVAWS, Severity of Violence Against Women Scale.

NA, not applicable as study estimates were continuous and could not be included in a meta-analysis.
Figure 2Forest plot estimates of the association between intimate partner violence and depression. Woolhouse et al 33 estimates are based on different subsamples and are mutually exclusive. Meta-analysis with depression as the dependent variable was also undertaken excluding the Chowdhary and Patel39 study which removes women with baseline depressive disorder from the analysis, but it did not materially change the overall pooled estimate (OR=1.85, 95% CI 1.35 to 2.49, I2=35.1%, p=0.202).
Figure 3Forest plot estimates of the association between intimate partner violence and alcohol use, hard drug use, marijuana use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Estimates from Gao et al 35 and Testa et al 28 are based on different subsamples and are mutually exclusive.
