Abstract
BACKGROUND: The trend of association between overweight and high serum total cholesterol (TC) among the elderly is unclear. In addition, there is little evidence of risk of underweight for high TC. Therefore, we examined the trend of association of overweight or underweight with high TC among Japanese elderly people using nationwide population-based data.Entities:

BMI, body mass index; MUFA, monounsaturated fatty acids; PUFA, polyunsaturated fatty acids; SD, standard deviation; SFA, saturated fatty acids; TC, total cholesterol.
aHigh TC was defined as ≥220 mg/dL.
bBMI was categorized into underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), normal (18.5–25.0 kg/m2), overweight (≥25.0 kg/m2).
cRegular exercise was defined as exercise ≥2 times/week and ≥30 min/session.
