Abstract
BACKGROUND: Although peripheral artery disease as defined by ankle-brachial index (ABI) is associated with incident atrial fibrillation (AF), questions remain about the risk of AF in borderline ABI (>0.90 to <1.0) or noncompressible arteries (>1.4). We evaluated the association of borderline ABI and ABI >1.4 in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, a population-based prospective cohort study. METHODS ANDEntities:

ABI indicates ankle‐brachial index; ARIC, Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities.
Values are mean (SD) or n (%).
Some participants have >1 medication.
Figure 2Age, race, and sex adjusted restricted cubic spline of the relationship between PAD and AF. P value for a linear relationship <0.001. Indicating it is not a linear association. ABI indicates ankle‐brachial index; AF, atrial fibrillation; PAD, peripheral artery disease.
