Abstract
BACKGROUND: Invasive Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus, GBS) infection most commonly occurs in infants; however, cases of GBS infection in adults, particularly in the elderly with significant underlying diseases, are being increasingly reported. We analyzed the serotype specific opsonophagocytic antibodies (the major mechanism of protection against GBS) in infants, adults, and the elderly.Entities:

OI = opsonization index, GBS = group B streptococcus, CI = confidence interval.
aThe percentage of subjects with OI ≥ 4; bSignificantly increased according to age within each serotype (P < 0.05).
Fig. 1Opsonization indices (OIs) against GBS serotypes by age groups. Horizontal bars represent median OIs (± interquartile range) for each age group and each serotype. Box plots indicate geometric means of OIs, while P values are for the comparison based on geometric mean differences of OIs. The lower limit of detection of OI, ‘4’ is indicated by the black dashed horizontal line.
aP < 0.001; bP < 0.05.
