Abstract
BACKGROUND: Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) characterized by the presence of unusual giant cells. It is a CD30+lymphoma of T-cells lineage, which shows anaplastic lymphoma kinase-nucleophosmin (ALK-NPM) rearrangement. ALCL on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) shows unusually large and bizarre tumor cells.Entities:

Figure 1(a) Cellular smear of ALK-positive ALCL showing monomorphic population of large atypical cells, with binucleated forms, scant to moderate cytoplasm, and prominent eosinophilic nucleoli (Papanicolaou stain, ×200). (b) Smear from ALCL showing atypical pleomorphic large cells with moderate cytoplasm (Papanicolaou stain, ×200). (c) ALK-positive ALCL smears showing highly pleomorphic atypical cells including characteristic hallmark cell and doughnut cell with frequent apoptotic bodies (Papanicolaou stain, ×200). (d) HL showing highly atypical mononucleated, binucleated, and multinucleated cells with prominent nucleoli in the background of reactive lymphoid population (Papanicolaou stain, ×400)
