Abstract
BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cytology (IOC) is a simple and quick technique with excellent preservation of cellular details. In the present study, we have evaluated the role of IOC by various methods of smear preparation and compared it with frozen section diagnosis. A scoring system was followed for epithelial tumors for characterization and grading on the basis of cellularity, pattern, nuclear, cytoplasmic features, and background details.Entities:

Scoring system used for grading ovarian epithelial tumors
Figure 1(a) Mucinous cystadenoma: FNAC smear reveal cohesive cell clusters with honey combing. Toluidine blue stain, 100×. (A-Inset)—Cluster of monomorphic epithelial cells with moderate to abundant vacuolated cytoplasm. (Giemsa stain, x400). (b) Borderline mucinous cystadenoma: Scrape smear shows high cellularity and cellular overlapping. (Giemsa stain, x100). (c) Mucinous adenocarcinoma (moderately differentiated). FNAC smear showing marked nuclear pleomorphism. (Giemsa stain, x100). (d) Mucinous adenocarcinoma (moderately differentiated): Imprint smear shows mucoid background and scattered hyperchromatic cells. (Giemsa stain, x100)
Figure 2(a-Inset): Serous cystadenofibroma: Scrape smear showing clusters of monomorphic epithelial cells; no stromal fragments seen. (Giemsa stain, x100). (b) Serous adenocarcinoma (moderately differentiated): Scrape smear moderate pleomorphism, inflammatory background and mitosis (inset). (Giemsa stain, x400)
Figure 3(a) Malignant Brenner tumor: Scrape smear showing high cellularity, syncytial pattern with mild to moderate nuclear pleomorphism. (Giemsa stain, x100). (b) FNAC smear reveal round to oval cells with prominent nucleoli and clear cytoplasm in few cells; (Inset)—Nuclear grooving. (Giemsa stain, x400)
