Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Western guidelines recommend Helicobacter pylori eradication in H. pylori-associated gastric polyps; however, there is no standard guideline in Korea. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of H. pylori eradication on the regression of gastric hyperplastic polyps in National Cancer Screening Cohort, representative of general population.Entities:

Figure 1.Study flow. Of a total of 11,279 subjects from 2007 to 2013, 1,131 persons had hyperplastic polyps. Of a total of 1,131 subjects with hyperplastic polyps, 183 eligible persons were analysed in a cohort study. EGD, esophagogastroduodenoscopy; HP, Helicobacter pylori.
Baseline characteristics of eligible participants (n = 183)
| Variable | |
|---|---|
| Male sex | 60 (32.8) |
| Age, yr | 57.5 ± 9.8 |
| Size of gastric polyp, mm | 4.6 ± 1.8 |
| Site of gastric polyp[ | |
| Antrum | 96 (48.5) |
| Body | 73 (36.9) |
| Fundus | 9 (4.5) |
| Cardia or GEJ | 20 (10.1) |
Values are presented as number (%) or mean ± SD.
GEJ, gastroesophageal junction.
Some persons have multiple polyps at the multiple sites.
Effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on the course of hyperplastic polyps
| Variable | Persistent hyperplastic polyps (n = 72) | Disappearance of hyperplastic polyps[ | Adjusted OR (95% CI) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Non-eradication | 56 (65.9) | 29 (34.1) | 1 | |
| Successful eradication | 16 (16.3) | 82 (83.7) | 5.56 (2.63–11.11) | < 0.001 |
| Size, mm | 5.3 ± 2.2 | 4.1 ± 1.2 | 0.59 (0.48–0.71) | < 0.001 |
| Age, yr | 59.1 ± 10.4 | 57.6 ± 9.1 | 0.99 (0.97–1.03) | 0.923 |
| Female sex | 48 (66.7) | 75 (68.0) | 1.02 (0.54–1.90) | 0.958 |
| Follow-up, yr | 2.2 ± 0.9 | 2.3 ± 0.9 | 1.04 (0.77–1.40) | 0.779 |
Values are presented as number (%) or mean ± SD. The base outcome is persistent hyperplastic polyp. Hence, the OR is the ratio for disappearance of hyperplastic polyps.
OR, odds ration; CI, confidence interval.
Disappearance of hyperplastic polyps means there was no hyperplastic polyps at follow-up among the baseline hyperplastic polyp group.
