Abstract
The development of advanced nurse practice in the UK has been slow compared to some parts of the world. This article explores the history of advanced level nursing, the drivers for advanced nurse practice in the context of contemporary nursing and clinical leadership, the identity of advanced practice nursing roles, and the importance of advanced nurse practice in the UK.Keywords: advanced practice; advanced practice nursing; advanced practitioner; nursing management; professional identity; scope of practice
