Abstract
BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in older subjects improves their quality of life. Serum ferritin as a marker of iron stores is an acute phase protein. In older subjects who usually have many concomitant chronic medical conditions, serum ferritin may increase in response to inflammatory processes irrespective of iron stores. This study was performed to determine the diagnostic properties of serum ferritin in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in older subjects.Entities:

Comparison of iron parameters in elderly subjects aged 60 years and older with and without iron deficiency anemia.
| Variables | IDA present | IDA absent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age (Mean ± SD) – years | 72.9 ± 8 | 71.6 ± 7.6 | 0.37 |
| Hemoglobin level – g/dL | 9.7 ± 1.3 | 10.1 ± 1.2 | 0.018 |
| Serum iron – μg/dL | 35.8 ± 8.3 | 95.3 ± 26.4 | 0.001 |
| Transferrin – μg/dL | 333.1 ± 26.7 | 269 ± 28.8 | 0.001 |
| Transferrin saturation level – mean, % | 10.85 ± 2.2 | 31.1 ± 8.2 | 0.001 |
| Serum ferritin – ng/mL | 148.5 ± 147.7 | 188.4 ± 134 | 0.036 |
IDA: iron deficiency anemia.
Confirmed by transferrin saturation <15%.
bNon-IDA anemia.
Student's t-test was used for comparison.
