Figure 1Images from representative rumen papillae in six-month-old calves from different dietary treatment groups. (A) Control = maternal milk+Timothy hay, (B) T1 = milk replacer+concentrate, (C) T2 = milk replacer+concentrate+Timothy hay, (D) milk replacer+concentrate+30% starch. All sections of the ruminal papillae were stained with hematoxylin and eosin; ×12.5 magnification; bar = 1,000 μm.
Figure 2The expression levels of HMGCS2, AKR1C1, and FABP3 genes in rumen reticulum tissues of Hanwoo cattle. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis was performed on total RNA extracted from six months rumen epithelium tissues in control, T1, T2, and T3 dietary treatment calves. 18S rRNA was used as the internal control. All data were normalized using 18S rRNA gene and expressed as fold change over the value obtained from the control group calves. Values are mean±standard errors (represented by vertical bars). HMGCS2, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA synthase 2; AKR1C1, aldo-keto reductase family 1, member C1-like; FABP3, fatty acid binding protein 3.
