Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among sex, race/ethnicity, and food security with the likelihood of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease for older adults. Method: Complex sample analysis by logistic regression models for chronic diseases were conducted from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2011 to 2012 and 2013 to 2014, for N = 3,871 adults aged ≥55 years.Entities:

Figure 1.Food insecurity across age groups.
Note. This is a special analysis of 10,781 adults aged 21 and above by complex cross tabulation. The groups were significantly different (p < .001). The analysis is of the study population with the addition of younger adults. Black = fear of running out of food; grey = no fear of running out of food; white = total within age-group.
Figure 2.Percent level of food security within BMI category.
Note. The analysis was performed by complex cross tabulation for the study population (adults ages ≥ 55 years). The groups were significantly different (p < .001). The extremes (underweight and BMI ≥ 35) were significantly different within the group. BMI = body mass index (kg/m2). Black = fear of running out of food; gray = no fear of running out of food. BMI total represents % within food security level.

Note. Other Hispanics (all Hispanic groups excluding Mexican Americans). High waist circumference and high BMI are indicators of obesity. The estimate is the percent with 95% confidence intervals of the weighted sample and based on the adjusted F, which is a variant of the second-order Rao–Scott adjusted chi-square statistic. Columns with the same letter are not significantly different from each other. CVD = cardiovascular disease (includes heart attack, stroke, angina, and/or coronary artery disease); BMI = body mass index.
