The therapeutic impact of blood culture results.

R E Holliman.

Abstract

The influence on therapy of blood culture results was monitored over a 3-month period. Approximately half the patients yielding significant cultures commenced initial or altered antibiotic treatment on the basis of laboratory results. Therapy based on a defined antibiotic policy was found to be satisfactory in most instances. Whilst an antibiotic policy allows effective treatment of many patients, there remains a need for an early microbiological diagnosis.
