Abstract
PURPOSE: The postoperative treatment after appendectomy is usually decided on the basis of the surgeons' intraoperative findings. Comparatively, the pathologic diagnosis of appendicitis is confirmed several days after the surgery; therefore, it usually does not affect the postoperative treatment strategy. The aim of this study was to investigate the discrepancies between the surgical and pathologic diagnoses of appendicitis and to identify their clinical implication.Entities:

Comparison of surgical and pathologic diagnoses
Group A, surgically and pathologically simple appendicitis; group B, surgically simple and pathologically complicated appendicitis; group C, surgically complicated and pathologically simple appendicitis; group D, surgically and pathologically complicated appendicitis.
Demography, disease severity, and treatment pathway according to surgical diagnoses or pathologic diagnoses
SD, standard deviation; IQR, interquartile range; IAA, Intra-abdominal abscess.
a)P-value of significant difference between surgical diagnoses, by chi-square, Fisher exact, Wilcoxon rank sum test. b)P-value of significant difference between pathologic diagnoses, by chi-square, Fisher exact, Wilcoxon rank sum test.
Comparisons between groups
P-value of significant difference between Group, by chi-square, Fisher exact, Kruskal-Wallis test.
Group A, surgically and pathologically simple appendicitis; group B, surgically simple and pathologically complicated appendicitis; group C, surgically complicated and pathologically simple appendicitis; group D, surgically and pathologically complicated appendicitis; SD, standard deviation; IQR, interquartile range; IAA; intra-abdominal abscess.
P-value of significant differences between a)group A vs. group B, b)group A vs. group C, c)group A vs. group D, d)group B vs. group C, e)group B vs. group D, and f)group C vs. group D, by multiple comparisons from Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post hoc Dwass, Steel, Critchlow-Fligner Method.
