Abstract
Background: Computed tomography (CT) of the lungs is the gold standard for assessing the extent of structural changes in the lungs. Spirometry-controlled chest CT (SCCCT) has improved the usefulness of CT by standardising inspiratory and expiratory lung volumes during imaging. This was a single-centre cross-sectional study in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Using SCCCT we wished to investigate the association between the quantity and extent of structural lung changes and pulmonary function outcomes, and prevalence of known CF lung pathogens.Entities:

Figure 1.Frequency distribution of CF children according to: (a) CF-CT total score and (b) gas trapping score. Percentage (Y-axis) of the given score (X-axis) is shown as bars and absolute numbers on top of each bar.
Figure 2.CF-CT total scores in % of maximal theoretical score and percentage of gas trapping according to infection status. (a) CF-CT total score, Mann–Whitney: p = 0.0028. (b) Gas trapping score, Mann–Whitney p = 0.0702. Data are presented as box and whiskers plots representing the 25th and 75th centiles and the range, respectively.
Figure A2.CF-CT total scores and percentage of gas trapping grouped according to infection status. (a) CF-CT total score, (b) gas trapping score. $Non-significant, *p<0.01, compared to the non-infected group (Mann–Whitney test). Data are presented as box and whiskers plots representing the 25th and 75th centiles and the range, respectively.
