Abstract
BACKGROUND: Scant research has been conducted on neural mechanisms underlying stress processing in individuals with alcohol dependence (AD). We examined neural substrates of stress in AD individuals compared with controls using an fMRI task previously shown to induce stress, assessing amygdala functional connectivity to medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).Entities:

Fig. 1Line graph of mean subjective stress level (100 point VAS) pre-scan to post-scan in the AD group. Results indicate that participants with AD experience significantly greater subjective stress after the stress task than before the stress task (* indicates p < 0.005).
Fig. 2Line graph of mean craving (100 point VAS) pre-scan to post-scan in the AD group. Results indicate that participants with AD did not crave alcohol significantly more after completing the stress task than before the stress task (p > 0.05).
