Abstract
BACKGROUND: This article reports three studies describing the development and validation of the 12-item Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale (SPTS-12). SPT refers to the anxiety-related cognitive, emotional, and behavioral reactions to pain that resemble the features of a traumatic stress reaction.Entities:

Notes:
The final version of the Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale-12 (SPTS-12) uses slightly different wording for this item (“When I am in pain, it keeps me awake at night”). SPTS-12 items for Study 1 are rated from 1 to 5 corresponding to options “not at all true,” “slightly true,” “somewhat true,” “very true,” and “entirely true,” respectively. Threshold 1 represents the level of SPT when participants begin to report “slightly true” rather than “not at all true.” Thresholds 2–4 represent the level of SPT at which participants begin to report the next highest category. Range is the level (z-scores) at which the item gives the most information about participants. Cronbach’s a (a if item deleted) and corrected item-total correlation coefficients (r) are also summarized. Data from Study 1.
Figure 1Item information curves (ICCs) for each of the 12 items of the Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale (N=103 participants).
Note: IICs provide the most information about the latent trait (Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization) where the curve peaks.
Figure 2Final version of the 12-item Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale (SPTS-12). Each of the 12 items are rated on a 5-point (0–4) scale, where 0 = not at all true; 1 = slightly true; 2 = somewhat true; 3 = very true; and 4 = entirely true.
