Life years lost among patients with a given disease.

Per Kragh Andersen1.

Abstract

A number of suggested measures of life years lost among patients with a given disease are reviewed, and some new ones are proposed. The methods are all phrased in the framework of a (Markov or non-Markov) illness-death model in combination with a population life table. The methods are illustrated using data on Danish male patients with bipolar disorder, and some recommendations are given.
