Abstract
BACKGROUND: Risk factors for developing heart valve and ascending aortic disease are based mainly on retrospective data. To elucidate these factors in a prospective manner, we have performed a nested case-referent study using data from large, population-based surveys. METHODS ANDEntities:

Values shown are numbers (referents, cases), P for trend, and odds ratios (95% CIs), stratified for primary surgical intervention. Cutoffs for quartiles (Q1–Q4) were stratified for sex (men and women): SBT 122.6, 131.1, 142.6 and 117.8, 130.8, 144.4, respectively; DBT 78.9, 83.6, 91.3 and 78.8, 81.7, 88.7, respectively; BMI 23.9, 25.9, 28.1 and 22.8, 25.1, 28.2, respectively; and cholesterol 5.3, 6.1, 6.8 and 5.5, 6.2, 6.8, respectively. AR indicates aortic regurgitation; AS, aortic stenosis; ascending aorta, disease of the ascending aorta; BMI, body mass index; DBP, diastolic blood pressure; DM, diabetes mellitus; IFG, impaired fasting glucose; IGT, impaired glucose tolerance; MR, mitral regurgitation; NGT, normal glucose tolerance; SBP, systolic blood pressure.
