Abstract
BACKGROUND: Information on diabetes-related excess medical expenditures for youth is important to understand the magnitude of financial burden and to plan the health care resources needed for managing diabetes. However, diabetes-related excess medical expenditures for youth covered by Medicaid program have not been investigated recently.Entities:

The matched control was selected using 1:1 propensity score matching.

Values in parentheses under the mean columns are median and under the SE columns are 25th and 75th percentile.
Ratio = mean value for those with DM (case) to mean value for those W/o DM (matched control).
Mean values are among all in the category.
t test was used to compare the means between enrollees with DM and W/o DM and χ2 test was used to compare the proportions between enrollees with DM and W/o DM.
All the t test and χ2 test statistics were statistically significant (P < 0.001).
Propensity score matched control without diabetes.
This is 100% by definition of diagnosed diabetes in this study.
DM indicates diabetes mellitus; ER, emergency room; W/o, without.
