Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

Julia Doswell Royster1.

Abstract

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is second only to presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, as a cause of hearing impairment; yet, it is preventable. This commentary summarizes the effects of noise on hearing, relevant workplace regulations, and ways to minimize excessive noise's deleterious impact on individuals' quality of life on and off the job. ©2017 by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and The Duke Endowment.
