Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated an association of serum uric acid with kidney disease. However, it is unknown whether this relationship is causal. Mendelian randomization takes advantage of allele randomization at birth to assess causation. Using this technique Ahola et al. found strong evidence against causation in Finnish Caucasians with type 1 diabetes mellitus. However, replication in other populations is needed to further assess a potential causal role for hyperuricemia in kidney disease.Entities:
