Nerve cell production in Hydra is deregulated by tumour-promoting phorbol ester.

Valerie Greger1, Stefan Berking1.

Abstract

The tumour-promoting phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) interfers with nerve cell production in Hydra when applied to the animals' culture medium. Precursor cells exposed to 0.2 nM TPA during the first half of their S-phase are prevented from differentiating into nerve cells. Precursor cells which start their S-phase following a treatment with TPA give rise to nerve cells. The frequency is higher than in untreated control animals.
