Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pounding food items in a wooden mortal is a common home chore in many communities in African and Asian countries. However, no empirical data exist on energy expenditure during this activity, and whether the activity can be considered a light, moderate, or vigorous intensity physical activity is unknown.Entities:

H=Habitual pounders, N=Non habitual pounders, C=Combined groups, b=Baseline, x=Exercise, r=First recovery, s=Second recovery, t=Third recovery, Rate Pressure Product values are in ’00. Exercise values are values immediately on cessation of pounding; r values are values 3 minutes on cessation of pounding; s values are values 6 minutes after cessation of pounding; t values are values 9 minutes after cessation of pounding; RPP value are in ’00 Superscript a means P<0.01 while b means P>0.01 but less than 0.05. Superscript x means there was a significant difference between habitual (H) and non habitual (NH) pounders
