Figure 1. Normally, all cells within the niche can act as stem cells, however those on the periphery of the niche have the higher chance of leaving the niche and differentiating. Conversely, should the stem cells be lost and the niche become vacant, differentiating cells can migrate into the niche and become new stem cells.
