Notes: Asthma–COPD overlap defined as at least one hospital admission for asthma and one for COPD (two different time points), prevalence with at least one admission before baseline (1993–1997), and incidence with admissions between baseline and end of follow-up (ie, July 1, 2013). Incidence rate calculated in persons at risk: those without COPD (n=56,692), asthma (n=56,685), or ACOS (n=56,979) at baseline for COPD, asthma, and asthma–COPD overlap, respectively. Data from the Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort: Tjønneland et al20 and Bonnelykke et al.21
Abbreviations: IR, incidence rate (per 1,000 person-years); CI, confidence interval; ACOS, asthma–COPD overlap syndrome.
Figure 2Incident cases of COPD, asthma, and asthma–COPD overlap.
Note: Participants with first-ever hospital admission for asthma, COPD, or both, ie, asthma–COPD overlap, after baseline (1993–1997) per 1,000 person-years overall and according to gender.
