Abstract
Although there are descriptions of transgender-affirmative group psychotherapy services in the literature, there is limited research on the topic. Mental health professionals who plan to offer such services should draw on evidence-based treatments, where appropriate, and have a working knowledge of current standards of care, practice guidelines, and counseling competencies. This article reviews and synthesizes the existing research and scholarship on this topic, placing an emphasis on group-specific competencies and intervention components that can be integrated into psychotherapy groups for transgender and gender nonconforming clients. Keywords: Affirmative psychotherapy; Gender identity; Group therapy; Mental health; Transgender
