Combining CNS transplantation and gene transfer.

X O Breakefield1.

Abstract

The applications of brain grafting for delivery of neuroactive substances to the brain can be increased dramatically by genetic modification of grafted cells. For example, cultured cells infected with retroviral vectors containing the "gene" for nerve growth factor and grafted into the CNS can effect NGF-dependent survival of cholinergic neurons.
