Abstract
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether an association between insulin resistance (IR) and muscle parameters is appreciable in young healthy men, independent of obesity. Furthermore, markers of muscle metabolism and hormones/possible determinants, were explored.Entities:

Age, anthropometric data, body composition (weight, height, BMI, lean and fat mass measured with DEXA, fat cross-sectional area (CSA) measured with pQCT), physical activity and smoking habits. Comparison of these characteristics in the two subject groups. Values are means ± Standard Deviations (p-values result from an independent t-test), only the present smoking status is reported in % (p-value results from chi-square test).

All biochemical parameters except estradiol and leptin levels were corrected for age, physical activity and fat mass. Estradiol related parameters and leptin were corrected for age and physical activity as fat mass is the main source of these parameters.
