Abstract
BACKGROUND: The environment of spaceflight may elevate an astronaut's clinical risk for specific diseases. The purpose of this study was to derive, as accurately as currently possible, an assessment of in-flight clinical "incidence" data, based on observed clinical symptoms in astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS).Entities:

In-flight tabulation of clinical symptoms, ISS Program through Expedition 37/38; 46 ISS crew members (nominally 6-month missions); total flight duration 7,508 days/20.57 flight years
| Medical conditions/clinical symptoms | Total events | Events/flight year |
|---|---|---|
| Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) | 2 | 0.1 |
| Prolonged congestion, rhinitis, sneezing | 20 | 1.0 |
| Herpes viruses (cold sores) | 6 | 0.3 |
| Ear related: pain, congestion, itchiness | 6 | 0.3 |
| Pharyngitis (sore throat) | 1 | 0.1 |
| Skin infection (including pus forming wounds on wrist, finger, feet) | 6 | 0.3 |
| Skin rash/hypersensitivity (including skin conditions such as tinea versicolor, dermatitis, rosacea) | 23 | 1.1 |
| Urinary tract infection | 2 | 0.1 |
| Infections and other (including conditions such as fever, aphthous ulcer, lymphadenitis) | 4 | 0.2 |

Notes: Relative percentages among the reported events are indicated.
Distribution of 42 notable in-flight medical events by flight month
| Flight month | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold sores | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Rashes | 7 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Allergy | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Infection | 2 | 0 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
| Total | 18 | 4 | 7 | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Notes: Forty-two recorded “notable” in-flight medical events, all from within the 4 categories, were evaluated in the context of mission phase. Evaluated crew members (n=46) were in space for approximately 6-month missions.
