Rank had a significant effect on δ15N values in males, but not in females. Model stability is indicated by the grey alternative model lines, suggesting some influence of single hair samples and individuals which did not influence our overall results.

According to our model the differences between males and females with different reproductive statuses are significant in δ13C values, with the highest values in lactating females. This relationship could not be tested in the δ15N values given the significant interaction of sex/reproductive state with social dominance rank.

The relationship between the variation in δ15N values and reproductive status interacting with age of offspring was clearly significant, suggesting that δ15N values change during pregnancy and within the lactation period with increasing age of infant. The model stability is indicated as alternative model lines (in gray) which fit well during pregnancy but also illustrate that it is unstable for lactating females, particularly as infants become increasingly independent from their mothers.
