Characteristics of trial participants
| Characteristics | Group A (control group, | Group B (reward group, | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mean age (years) | 7.28 ± 2.36 | 7.34 ± 2.69 | 0.633* | 0.528 |
| Mean age of boys (years) | 7.32 ± 3.18 | 7.33 ± 2.41 | –0.018* | 0.986 |
| Mean age of girls (years) | 7.25 ± 2.29 | 6.62 ± 2.30 | –0.048* | 0.080 |
| Gender (male/female), | 22/28 | 24/26 | 0.161† | 0.688 |
Values are expressed as the mean ± standard deviation (SD) or n. *t-test was used to test the difference in age between the different groups. †Chi-square test was used to test the difference in gender between the two groups.
Change in the score of the Children's Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) before and after the dental treatment in the two groups
| Groups | Mean score before treatment | Mean score after treatment | Percentage of participants’ CFSS-DS score below 35 after treatment, | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group A (Control group, | 50.28 ± 10.69 | 46.22 ± 11.86 | −0.398 | 0.345* | 48 (96.0) |
| Group B (Reward group, | 51.12 ± 10.47 | 25.98 ± 5.94 | 14.724 | <0.001* | 7 (14.0) |
Values are expressed as the mean ± standard deviation (SD) or n (%). *Two-sample t-test was used to compare the differences between the mean CFSS-DS score before and after the treatment. In Group B, P-value indicated a significant correlation between the reward system and the change in the sore of CFSS-DS at the 0.001 level.
