Abstract
PURPOSE: Patients with gout are similar to those with bacterial infection in terms of the nature of inflammation. Herein we compared the differences in procalcitonin (PCT) levels between these two inflammatory conditions and evaluated the ability of serum PCT to function as a clinical marker for differential diagnosis between acute gouty attack and bacterial infection.Entities:

Fig. 1Receiver operating characteristic curves for procalcitonin (PCT), uric acid, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. PCT showed better distinguishing ability than uric acid or CRP.
Fig. 2Receiver operating characteristic curves for procalcitonin (PCT) in patients with serum uric acid levels ≥6.0 mg/dL. PCT showed an ability to distinguish between gouty attack and infection.
