Targeting the at-risk male: a strategy for adolescent pregnancy prevention.

F I Watson, M J Kelly.

Abstract

This article reviews some current literature relative to adolescent pregnancy, specifically the male partner. An overview is given of a successful program in Norfolk, Virginia, that addresses the dilemmas that these teenagers face. The young men's sexuality awareness program, funded by a federal grant through Eastern Virginia Medical School Area Health Education Center, was started in September 1985 with the following specific goals: to heighten the level of sexuality awareness among young men, to increase levels of self-esteem, and to create an awareness of what it means to be an effective father. The components, successes of the program, and implications for the future are discussed.
