Abstract
MALDI-TOF (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight) mass spectrometry has emerged as a potential tool for microbial characterization and identification in many microbiology departments. The technology is rapid, sensitive, and relatively inexpensive in terms of both the labour and costs involved. This review provides an overview on its utility for strain typing and epidemiological studies and explains the methodological approaches that can be used both for the performance of the technique and for the analysis of results. Finally, the review summarizes studies on the characterization of distinct bacterial species. Keywords: Bacterial typing; Epidemiologia; Epidemiology; Espectrometria de masas; MALDI-TOF; Mass spectrometry; Tipificacion bacteriana
