Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic inequalities in health represent unfairness in the health distribution of a population. Efforts to produce information on mortality distributions in many low and middle income countries (LMICs) are mostly hampered by lack of data disaggregated by socioeconomic groups. In this paper we describe how mortality statistics obtained from multiple data sources were combined to provide an evaluation of the socioeconomic distribution of mortality in Malaysia, a LMIC located in the Asia Pacific region.Entities:

Fig 1Geographical distribution of the Socioeconomic Index and Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) for males and females in Peninsular Malaysia.
Yellow areas represent high socioeconomic advantage and dark brown areas, low socioeconomic advantage. The size of the blue and red circles represents the extent of premature mortality among males and females respectively. As values for PYLL differ for both genders, different ranges are used for both; therefore comparisons are for between males or females geographically and not for between males and females.
