Abstract
BACKGROUND: Research suggests that mental health is affected not only by smoking, but also by secondhand smoking. But the most researches have been conducted in North America and/or Europe. We examined whether this relationship remains evident within the South Korean population. Specifically, we investigated the effect of secondhand smoking on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation.Entities:

Sociodemographic characteristics and related factors associated with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation
Values are presented as mean±standard deviation or number (%), unless otherwise specified. P-value was estimated by univariate logistic regression analysis, reference groups are presented in parentheses in subgroups, e.g., (male).
*Including survey participant. †Including history of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and stroke. ‡Including any history of gastric cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, or other type of other types of cancer. §Including any history of regular walking (at least 30 minutes of walking/d for at least 5 d/wk) or moderate intensity exercise (high intensity exercise, such as a running, hiking, fast cycling, for more than 30 minutes at a time at least 3 times/wk), or high intensity exercise (moderate intensity exercise, such as a slow swimming, tennis (doubles), volleyball, for more than 20 minutes at a time at least 5 times/wk).
Depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation analyzed by secondhand smoke and sex
OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval.
*OR and 95% CI were estimated by univariate logistic regression analysis. †OR and 95% CI were estimated by multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusted by age, employment status, house income, education, health insurance, marital status, number of familial member, subjective body perception, subjective health status, number of chronic disease, cancer, sleeping hours, and alcohol use disorders identification test score.
Depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation analyzed by secondhand smoke at the workplace and participant sex
OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval.
*OR and 95% CI were estimated by a univariate logistic regression analysis. †OR and 95% CI were estimated by a multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for age, employment status, household income, education level, health insurance, marital status, number of family members, subjective body perception, subjective health status, number of chronic diseases, cancer, hours of sleep, and alcohol use disorders identification test score.
