Although there is no ideal treatment for ankle arthritis, there are high-quality studies that help guide treatment in patients of varying demographics. Many inherent risks are linked with each treatment option; however, the risks of greatest concern are early implant loosening after arthroplasty that requires revision surgery and the acceleration of adjacent joint degeneration associated with arthrodesis.
