Abstract
OPINION STATEMENT: Statins are a group of lipid-lowering agents that are competitive inhibitors of the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase that have been used to reduce cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular events. Statins have been also shown to reduce the risk of stroke. In this review, we cover the role of statins in cerebrovascular disease through lipid-lowering mechanisms and other "pleiotropic" effects that provide protection against cerebrovascular events and potentially contribute to improve functional outcome after stroke.Entities:
