Why Are Women Underrepresented in STEM Fields?

Hildegard Nimmesgern1.

Abstract

Women are still underrepresented in the so-called “hard” fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this Guest Editorial, H. Nimmesgern, Chairwoman of the Arbeitskreis Chancengleichheit in der Chemie (AKCC), a working group of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), describes the challenges women in science face and organizations that have been set up to help them in their research careers.
