Abstract
Background: Attachment theory can contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of Internet addiction. Method: An online survey was carried out to assess socio-demographic characteristics, online activity, attachment style, symptoms of Internet addiction and online relationship motives. Results: Participants with secure and insecure attachment style differed in their tendency to abusive Internet use and their online relationship motives. Discussion: These results provide insights into the pathogenesis of Internet addiction. Therapeutic implications are discussed. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.
