Abstract
BACKGROUND: Human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (HWJMSCs) express liver-specific markers such as albumin, alpha-fetoprotein, cytokeratin-19, cytokeratin-18, and glucose-6-phosphatase. Therefore, they can be considered as a good source for cell replacement therapy for liver diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various culture systems on the hepatocyte-specific gene expression pattern of naïve HWJMSCs.Entities:

Figure 1The flow cytometry showed the CD marker expression pattern of Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells (A). The cells differentiated into osteogenic (B) and adipogenic cell lineages (C).
Figure 2The inverted microscopy showed that the cells cultured on conventional monolayer system (A) and 2D collagen gel (B) had fibroblast-like morphology. The cells, which were cultured on 3D collagen scaffolds (C) showed a star-like morphology; however, some round cells were also observed.
