Abstract
BACKGROUND: Conflicting evidence exists regarding whether reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and proteinuria are independent risk factors for stroke and its subtypes in hypertensive patients. This study investigated the association of these renal measures with first incident stroke in adults under treatment for hypertension in China. METHODS ANDEntities:

Values are presented as mean±SD for continuous variables and n (%) for categorical variables. BMI indicates body mass index; eGFR, estimated glomerular filtration rate; HDL, high‐density lipoprotein.
BMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Diabetes mellitus was defined as self‐reported physician diagnosed diabetes or use of hypoglycemic agents or a fasting blood glucose concentration ≥7.0 mmol/L.
